With more than 18 years of career coaching experience,\nNatalie brings to her Intoo clients a wealth of knowledge and expertise.\nShe holds a master\u2019s in higher education and student affairs with an additional\nyear of coursework in vocational rehabilitation counseling, as well as\ncertifications in professional career coaching, employment interview, resume\nwriting, and assessment administration and interpretation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this Q and A, Natalie shares her process for working closely with her Intoo candidates\u2014most of whom are mid- to late-career professionals\u2014to support their journeys towards dream jobs and careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Career coaching offers accountability, motivation, structure, and an unbiased sounding board to support the candidate\u2019s professional aspirations.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can a Intoo\nOutplacement candidate expect when they first click \u201cchat\u201d and connect with\nyou?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They should expect personalized attention. Every\ncandidate is different\u2014they have unique needs and varying degrees of readiness\nfor action steps in the employment transition process. We meet them where they\nare and tailor the coaching approach to their industry, experience level,\ncommunication and work style, and career targets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think coaches aim to release the job seeker\u2019s internal\ndrive, and then step out of the way so their goals can be realized. We empower\ntheir self-discovery, clarify their options, and amplify their brand\nmessaging\u2014whether it\u2019s resumes or cover letters or social media reviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot comes with career coaching. It offers accountability,\nmotivation, structure, and support of the candidate\u2019s achievement, of their\npersonal aspirations. We\u2019re able to increase the efficiency of their process by\nmeeting them where they are and either restrategizing if there\u2019s something\nthat\u2019s not working, or working with that candidate who is doing well and\nhelping them to recognize what\u2019s going well in their search to increase their\nmotivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there\u2019s quite a lot that can be gained from the coaching process\u2014from clicking \u201cchat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Providing structure to the networking process is a critical step in optimizing the efficiency of the candidates\u2019 job search campaign.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you counsel someone\nwho isn\u2019t quite sure what they want in terms of a job or career? Where do you\nstart?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m often in conversations with people who\u2019ve\nbeen in a specific field or industry for some time and are now reevaluating\ntheir fit with that work. Some say, \u201cI want a fresh start, I\u2019m looking for\nsomething different\u2014where do we begin?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assessment instruments in the Intoo\nprogram are a wonderful starting point for many. Candidates can send results to\ntheir coach so we can go through the interpretation process together. That\nhelps us get the conversation started with a focus on the candidate\u2019s\nstrengths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coaching questions also bring light to the candidate\u2019s options and\npriorities. We begin to add the layers of interests, of values, and to\nhave a discussion: What are some of the points of curiosity that you have? What\nare the things you are doing when you lose your sense of time? What are the\nthings you would do in your free time? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another very important step is encouraging\ncandidates to talk to people in organizations that they are drawn to or those\ndoing the kind of work they wish to explore. As coaches, we can point them to\nwonderful sources of preliminary industry research, like the Occupational\nOutlook Handbook or O*NET, but getting a first-hand perspective is invaluable.\nProviding structure to the networking process is a critical step in optimizing\nthe efficiency of the candidates\u2019 job search campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I often propose that candidates reach out to professional associations in industries they\u2019d like to explore and see them invited to local chapter meetings to network with leaders in those fields. That\u2019s an important step that candidates sometimes need a bit of encouragement to pursue. If it\u2019s been some time since they&#8217;ve found themselves in an employment transition, they might seek help in the development of questions and a list of target contacts and companies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Providing job seekers with a safe space\u2014where they can imagine and explore possibilities and then strategically target roles that honor their values, interests, commitments, and use of favorite skills in the world of work\u2014that\u2019s an honor for me.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Could you share an\nexperience you had with a person you coached that especially touched you or\nmade you proud?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I spoke with a candidate yesterday who told me\nshe just received an offer for her dream job. She and I have been in\ncommunication through this program for the last few months. We\u2019ve collaborated\non goal-setting, resume updates, cover letter development, preparation for\ninterviews, networking, salary negotiations, and also managing the highs and\nthe lows that come with any job search.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the coaching process, she\u2019s been\nactively networking with professionals in her target organizations.&nbsp;While\nthe opportunity she ultimately secured is one that she pursued from the start,\nit takes time and tenacity to stick with the process and stay positive over the\ncourse of months to reach the point of offer. She did such a fabulous job of\nsetting goals and tracking progress along the way. She also took breaks as\nneeded to maintain a healthy balance and a positive perspective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every day was easy for her. Sometimes she\u2019d\nstart the call by telling me, \u201cThis is a low day for me. What can we do to help\npick things up again?\u201d The week prior to receipt of an offer, she said, \u201cYou\nknow, I feel my confidence starting to lessen because it\u2019s been months out of\nthe workplace, and I gain my confidence from my work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following that call, she did some journaling as\na reminder of professional success stories. It boosted her confidence just in\ntime for negotiation dialogue.&nbsp;It was really important in that process to\nhave a clear understanding of her own worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been a joy to follow her journey. She\u2019s all\nset with a start date and is eager to go forward.
