For some job seekers, the idea of asking a career coach for help can bring up unexpected fears. What if the coach criticizes my unsuccessful efforts so far? What if the coach pushes me to stay in a career I\u2019m no longer interested in? What if the coach gets frustrated I still haven\u2019t figured out what I want to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/11\/meet-our-coach_800px_ellen.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6673\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are the types of anxieties Ellen,\nIntoo career coach, quickly allays in the clients she works with. With more\nthan 10 years of career coaching experience, Ellen is a master at listening\ncarefully to each individual candidate\u2019s concerns and tailoring her coaching to\nmatch their needs. Ellen, who earned her MBA after completing a bachelor of\nscience in family and community services, combines her business acumen with her\nservice-oriented perspective to gently guide her candidates toward their dream\njobs and careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this Q and A, Ellen shares her philosophy for coaching Intoo candidates\u2014whether they\u2019re early on in their careers, established in their fields, or in the process of changing industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>My philosophy is meeting people where they are. I start with questions&#8230; I don&#8217;t make assumptions, and I just try to find out where that person is. Then, we can see where to go from there. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do have a philosophy or a personal\nprocess that you like to follow when you&#8217;re coaching?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My\nphilosophy is meeting people where they are. I start with questions. \u201cWhere are you in this life journey and where are you in\nthis point of your job search? Have you just started? Have you been searching\nfor months?\u201d\nI don&#8217;t make assumptions, and I just\ntry to find out where that person is. Then, we can see where to go from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\ntell everybody that the process is individualized. You get different\npersonalities, and everything is up to that individual. Some people come in and\nneed to build confidence, that emotional component, before they can dive into\nthe job search.\nOther people don&#8217;t need that, and\ninstantly want to get to their resume. So, I let the needs of each individual\nguide me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have one or two tips you would\ngive people who are early in their careers to put themselves on a successful\npath?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of the time people tend to understate and undervalue their\naccomplishments. It\u2019s important that they be confident in their experiences, realize how much they have\naccomplished, and understand the value they can offer to companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go into a new role, it\u2019s good to soak up everything and gain\nexperience in all areas of the job, even things outside of your role. Take it\nall in, and it will help you as you navigate throughout your career. You might\nfind there are things you didn\u2019t even realize you liked!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For people who don\u2019t think they need\na career coach, could you talk about what the benefits of working with a career\ncoach are?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nactually like working with that type of personality a lot! I&#8217;ve had several\npeople, especially higher level ones, who take a little convincing. Initially,\nthey don&#8217;t think they need a career coach or they don&#8217;t really understand the\nservice. And so, a lot of times, it&#8217;s just explaining what we offer and getting\nthem to think differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as employers want to\nknow how candidates can help their company, people have questions about how I\u2019m\ngoing to help them in their transition. I let them know it\u2019s about working as partners to build their resume, cover letters, or\nLinkedIn, or to prepare for interviews. As career coaches, we&#8217;re not here to\ntell you what you&#8217;re doing wrong. The process is about guiding,\nencouraging and helping people to build their confidence along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes I\u2019ll pick something out from their resume and give an example of how to make it sound better. Or I might take a small detail of the conversation we\u2019ve had about their job history and say, &#8220;Well, what if you positioned it this way?&#8221; To them, it&#8217;s just something that they haven\u2019t given much thought to, maybe because it happened years ago. But I like to help people to see that the small things can add up to big things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The majority of the time people tend to understate and undervalue their accomplishments. It\u2019s important that they be confident in their experiences, realize how much they have accomplished, and understand the value they can offer to companies. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you counsel someone who isn\u2019t quite sure what they\nwant in terms of a job or career? Where do you start?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nusually start with the resume, because it helps me to understand their\nbackground. All the assessments that we have on the Intoo&#8217;s outplacement solution\nplatform are great too, since they help bring out certain qualities and\ncharacteristics that they need and want in a new career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nI would say a lot of the coaching I provide comes from just asking questions. \u201cWhat does your ideal job look like? Let\u2019s\nfigure out how to get you there. What\nare some of the qualities and characteristics in this particular role that you\nhad? The culture? The job?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\nI coach also depends on the type and depth of the change a candidate is looking\nfor. Sometimes what they want to do is still within their wheelhouse. In that case,\nit might be a matter of rearranging a few things in the resume. But if what\nthey want to do is the polar opposite of what they\u2019ve done in the past, I like to\nstart with a clean slate and ask, \u201cWhat are some things that you feel are going\nto be good for you? What are things that you&#8217;ve always wanted to do? Maybe\nnow&#8217;s the chance to try them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nprocess is not always easy. I&#8217;m pretty honest about that.
