Some people plunge too quickly into applying for jobs without considering what type of career would be most meaningful for them at this point in their lives. Others get stuck in too much soul-searching, taking assessment after assessment test and letting weeks pass without sending out their resumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/11\/meet-our-coach_800px_jyl.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7240\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Defining\nbig picture goals while following through on the small details of a job search:\nThat\u2019s what Jyl, Intoo Career Coach, helps candidates do. With more than 20\nyears of career coaching experience, Jyl knows some unique techniques for empowering\ncandidates to leverage their interests and aptitudes while simultaneously\ntaking action. Jyl, who earned her bachelor\u2019s in psychology and her master\u2019s in\neducation, has taught credited undergraduate courses at two universities. She\nis also a certified professional resume writer and a certified MBTI\npractitioner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this Q and A, Jyl shares her tips for career success today\u2014not only in a job search, but also in the changing workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>With the multi-generations that are in the workplace today, flexibility, openness, and a willingness to learn from each other are crucial.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your favorite part about\nbeing a career coach?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My\nfavorite part is developing the relationship. Coaching is 80 percent the\ncandidate and 20 percent the coach. I&#8217;m very much a structured person, so I\nlove developing a relationship with the candidates, helping them identify a\nstructure for their job search, and seeing them move forward with success. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Intoo,\nI work primarily with higher level professionals\u2014directors, VPs, on up to the C\nlevel. I kind of feel like I&#8217;ve moved with my Gen X age group in a way. When I\nstarted in higher ed, my generation was still going through school. Now,\nthey&#8217;re the ones with 20 years of expertise, in the leadership roles. As a\ncareer coach, it&#8217;s really fun to reignite people&#8217;s interest in why they&#8217;re doing\nwhat they do, what they want in another job\u2014then helping them find that spark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The\nworkplace has changed a lot in recent years. Could you share some of your core\npieces of advice for job seekers today?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be prepared, flexible and open to learning up and down and cross-generationally. A lot of flexibility has to do with how you work and how you communicate. Sometimes, I have less senior candidates who kind of feel like they already know everything. Other times, I have older candidates who have a lot of knowledge and seniority. In both cases, there\u2019s resistance to change. With the multi-generations that are in the workplace today, flexibility, openness, and a willingness to learn from each other are crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>As a career coach, it&#8217;s really fun to reignite people&#8217;s interest in why they&#8217;re doing what they do, what they want in another job\u2014then helping them find that spark.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For people who don\u2019t think they need\na career coach, could you talk about what the benefits of working with a career\ncoach are?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well,\nI think the more you get into your career, the harder it is to see outside the\nbox. Earlier on in your career, you might have moved from one job to the other easily,\nand you might have done that three or four times. But the fifth time, you can\nexperience a slap of reality that makes you realize, \u201cUh oh, I&#8217;ve run through\nmy network,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m looking for higher-level positions now and I don&#8217;t know\nwhat to do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just\nlike you would go to the doctor for preventative checkup, you can go to a\ncareer coach for a preventative checkup and ask, \u201cHow does my resume look? How\ndoes my LinkedIn profile look?\u201d&nbsp; Often\ncandidates will keep adding and adding more items to their resume, but start to\nwonder, \u201cAm I adding the right things? Should I be looking at doing other\nthings to make sure I&#8217;m creating an attractive candidate profile, with a strong\nportfolio of skills and experiences?\u201d A coach can help answer these questions.\nAnd if a candidate has run out of ideas, networks, or resources, a coach can\nconnect them to new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you counsel someone who isn\u2019t quite sure what they\nwant in terms of a job or career? Where do you start?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\ndo have career and personality assessments in the Intoo platform, so I\nadvise candidates to go through those to organize their thoughts. But I&#8217;m a\nvery action-oriented kind of person, so I\u2019ll also often say, &#8220;Go out there\nand find 10 jobs that interest you.\u201d I tell them not to worry\nfor now about where they&#8217;re located,\nor even what company it is or what industry they\u2019re in, but just to go look for\n10 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nthey have that list, we go through each one individually. I\u2019ll ask, \u201cWhat\nresonates the most with you?\u201d This helps us figure out what is important to the\ncandidate\u2014what excites them, what motivates them, what skills they want to use\nand develop. Usually, we can narrow down the kind of career the candidate wants\nto pursue pretty quickly. Then, we\u2019ll talk about how to get to that career. Is\nthis a lateral opportunity the candidate can transition into relatively easily?\nOr do we need to do some rebranding, and a little bit of career transitioning? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nthere has to be some rebranding and career track transitioning, I\u2019ll say,\n&#8220;All right, let&#8217;s go and find five people that are associated with these\nkinds of jobs, talk to them about those jobs, and identify what\u2019s common in\nthose conversations and what resonates you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This method keeps the candidate active. Assessments are great, but we don\u2019t want to let\nthat become a passive, time-prolonging process.
