{"id":8298,"date":"2020-05-18T08:00:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-18T15:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careerarc.com\/blog\/?p=8298"},"modified":"2020-05-18T08:00:11","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T15:00:11","slug":"intoo-outplacement-candidate-success-story-roger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intoo.com\/us\/blog\/intoo-outplacement-candidate-success-story-roger\/","title":{"rendered":"Roger Slowinski Finds a Technician Position Amid the Coronavirus Crisis : A Candidate Success Story\ufeff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Before his layoff in early 2020, Roger Slowinski had never applied for a job online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"213\" height=\"289\" class=\"wp-image-8299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/11\/careerarc-outplacement-success-story-roger-slowinski.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d been with my company for 28 years, through a few acquisitions,\u201d Roger said. \u201cI started out as a field service engineer, then when the company moved me to Omaha, I did tech support and bench technician work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in January, Roger\u2019s company reduced its workforce. So for the first time in nearly three decades, Roger had to update his resume\u2014and learn how to conduct a job search online. The first month, he tackled the process all on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt first, I just added to my old resume and put in my new information. I tried that and, well, I did have some interviews, but those jobs didn\u2019t pay enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the coronavirus pandemic hit. The number of open positions shrank, and a job interview he had set up was put on hold\u2014indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would send off these resume applications, and I wouldn&#8217;t hear anything back,\u201d Roger said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know whether the job was on hold, or they didn&#8217;t care for my resume.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Roger decided to get some help. He activated <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.intoo.com\/outplacement\/outplacement-roi?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Intoo&#8217;s outplacement solution<\/a>, a career transition service he\u2019d been given by his former employer as part of his severance package. Once he logged on to the platform, he was able to quickly submit his resume in for review. Intoo career coach Karen took a close look at it, and the two got on the phone to start the revision process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" class=\"wp-image-8300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/11\/meet-our-coach_800px_karen.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKaren would go through and change stuff, then I would look at it, until we finally got it to where I wanted it,\u201d Roger said. \u201cIt was nice being able to talk to somebody that knew what&#8217;s current and what needs to be on the resume now. We expanded more on my last job\u201430 years ago, you didn&#8217;t have to put all that in there. So that was just nice talking with her and figuring stuff out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two worked collaboratively, with Karen listening closely to Roger talk about the specifics of his job\u2014down to the types of equipment he worked with\u2014and finetuning her suggestions to match. Karen also gave Roger tips to ward off potential age discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of my stuff had my dates on them. That was the highlight. And now that I&#8217;m 63, you don&#8217;t want to highlight that. So I redid the resume so the dates weren&#8217;t so obvious, so when someone first glanced at it, it wasn&#8217;t something that drew your attention. And we took off one of the jobs I had back in the day. We got it down to one page.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a couple meetings with Karen, Roger\u2019s new resume was ready. He started sending it out\u2014and getting better responses. Soon after, Roger accepted a technician job with Fiserv, a financial services technology company. I think the new resume made a difference, especially since with one company, I had applied twice before with my old resume and didn\u2019t hear anything.
