INTOO Unlocking Organisational Success Report 2024

Employee growth and development report from INTOO

Unlocking organisational success by supporting employee growth

Career development is one of the most important drivers of employee engagement, motivation and loyalty. However, many employees feel they are not getting the support they need from their managers or their organisation.

INTOO’s employee growth and development report explores how career development support affects retention, performance and organisational success. Created in partnership with Workplace Intelligence, the report draws on research with 1,600 HR leaders and employees to understand what people really need to grow at work.

The findings show a clear gap between what employees expect and what organisations provide. Many employees want better guidance, more meaningful development opportunities and more regular career conversations with their managers.

For HR leaders and business leaders, this creates an important question. How can organisations support employee growth in a way that improves engagement, strengthens loyalty and helps people build long-term careers?

Why employee growth and development matters

When employees feel supported in their career development, they are more likely to stay engaged, motivated and committed to their organisation.

The report highlights that workers who feel at least somewhat supported by their manager are nearly 7x more likely to say they made a lot of career progress in the previous year. However, almost half of employees say their manager does not know how to help them with career development.

This lack of support can have a serious impact. HR leaders predict that 25% of employees, and 44% of Gen Z employees, are likely to quit within six months due to a lack of career development support.

What the report covers

Inside the employee growth and development report, you’ll find insight into:

  • Why career development is closely linked to loyalty and retention
  • What employees expect from their managers and employers
  • How poor career advice can affect confidence, wellbeing and progression
  • Why Gen Z employees place such high value on career guidance
  • The role of managers in supporting career conversations
  • The importance of learning, development, mentoring and coaching
  • How career development support can improve engagement and job satisfaction
  • Why internal mobility matters for long-term organisational success

The report also explores why employees value development opportunities, including technical skills training, soft skills learning, mentoring, coaching and opportunities to work on new projects.

Creating a workplace where employees can thrive

Employee development does not always need to mean promotion or a pay rise. Many employees see learning opportunities, coaching, mentoring and project experience as meaningful forms of career advancement.

By supporting managers, improving career conversations and offering high-quality learning and development programmes, organisations can help employees progress while strengthening engagement, retention and performance.
